Removing New Mattress Odors
New mattresses often have a distinctive smell that is the result of how they’re made. While it may be reminiscent of the well-known ‘new car smell’ or a freshly opened can of paint, in reality, it’s the result of the chemicals that are used in manufacturing the mattress. The release of these chemical odors from your new mattress is called ‘off-gassing’. In memory foam mattresses, these odors come from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as chlorofluorocarbons, formaldehyde, benzene, methylene chloride, toluene, trichloroethane, naphthalene, and perfluorocarbons. Since all mattresses are required to be flame retardant, VOCs are used in the manufacturing process to meet these safety requirements. To get rid of the smell and let the off-gassing dissipate, give your new mattress time to ‘breathe’ after unboxing it and before covering it with your bedding, anywhere from several hours to several days. If the weather in nice, it’s even recommended that you open it outside and let it breathe for two days or more, if possible. This is the best way to avoid breathing in the VOC off-gasses.
Cleaning Dirt & Grime from Mattresses
Giving your mattress a deep clean every six months helps keep it fresh. First strip the bed and wash the bedding - sheets, pillowcases, and mattress covers. You should use hot water to get rid of dust mites. Some pillows are actually machine-washable, too, but check the labels to make sure. Next, using your vacuum’s upholstery attachment vacuum the whole surface of the mattress, as well as the sides. To get at hidden dirt or dust in the seams, you should use the crevice attachment. Next do any spot cleaning your mattress may need using a commercial stain remover. Spray the cleaner onto a cloth, blot the stain with the cloth. Then use cold water on a different cloth and blot the stain repeatedly until it lifts. You want to use as little moisture as possible. After the mattress is dry, sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface and let it set for several hours so the baking soda can break down any acids and absorb the remaining moisture and odor. Once the baking soda has had a chance to work, vacuum the mattress again. For a complete cleaning, flip the mattress and repeat the process. Our pros at A Plus are experts at cleaning mattresses thoroughly so you can sleep in a fresh, inviting bed.
Mattress Stain Removal
It’s practically inevitable that your mattress will experience stains, especially from spilled liquids like coffee or wine or juice. If you have a mattress protector, they usually include a layer of waterproof or liquid resistant material to prevent getting stains right down on the mattress itself. If you don’t have a mattress protector, the best way to prevent stains is to remove your bedding immediately and pre-treat the stains on your sheets with a laundry stain remover and put them in the wash. For your mattress, blot up as much of the liquid as you can, then treat the stain with a small amount of liquid detergent or a commercial stain remover. If the stain doesn’t have time to set in, it will usually come out pretty easily. To be sure, let the area dry. If the stain remains, just repeat the treatment with liquid detergent. Be sure the mattress is completely dry before putting the mattress cover and sheets back on. If you’re not sure about how to clean stains on your mattress or they resist your efforts, our professionals at A Plus can will be glad to restore your mattress to pristine condition.
